On Tuesday, Marzieh Afkham congratulated the Iraqi government, nation and senior clerics after the Arab country’s parliament approved the cabinet proposed by Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
The Iranian diplomat expressed hope the new Iraqi government “could soon overcome the security challenge [in the country] caused by terrorists’ attacks.”
She also hoped that Baghdad would follow “its national plans for the full development of Iraq and provide security, welfare and comfort” for the people.
Afkham also highlighted Tehran’s readiness for further enhancement of ties with Baghdad.
Earlier in the day, Iran President Hassan Rouhani also offered felicitations to al-Abadi, hoping that peace and stability would be restored to Iraq and the entire Middle East during the new premier’s tenure.
On Monday, the Iraqi parliament officially named Abadi as the country’s new prime minister and approved most of his proposed cabinet ministers.
Abadi has requested an additional week to find appropriate nominees for posts such as interior and defense minister, since his first nominees were rejected by parliament.
The formation of a new government is seen as a major step in resolving the political impasse in Iraq as the country is battling a fresh wave of terrorism fueled by ISIL Takfiri terrorists over the past months.
Foreign-backed ISIL militants, which are controlling large swathes of land in northern and western Iraq, have terrorized all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, Christians and Izadi Kurds, in their advances in the country.
