Rouhani: Iran determined to end nuclear standoff

Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani says reaching a consensus over his country’s nuclear energy program with the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany will have positive effects on the entire world economy.

“Iran is seriously determined to reach agreement and entente and we hope that the opposite party will also have serious determination because an agreement will benefit the region, the P5+1 countries, Iran and the global economy,” President Hassan Rouhani said on Thursday.

He said that a final accord between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the United States, France, Britain, Russia and China – plus Germany would persuade foreign investors to invest in Iran.

Rouhani described the sanctions imposed on Iran by the Western governments as a “misplaced, illegal and cruel pressure on each and every Iranian.”

Iran and the six countries are to resume their negotiations to discuss ways of reaching a final agreement over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

The two sides clinched a landmark interim deal in Geneva, Switzerland, on November 23, 2013. The agreement, which took effect on January 20 and expired six months later on July 20, has been extended until November 24.

On Wednesday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) issued a new report, confirming Iran’s commitment to the interim nuclear deal.

The monthly update report by the IAEA indicated that the Islamic Republic continues to meet its commitments under the interim accord.
