A Syrian official in charge of national reconciliation has been assassinated, al-Alam correspondent reports.

Sheikh Saleh al-Khatib was killed in a bomb explosion at al-Salehin mosque in the town of Yalda in Rif Dimashq Governorate on Friday.

The bomb exploded in the mosque during Friday prayer.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011. Reports say some 140,000 people have so far been killed and millions of others displaced because of the foreign-hatched crisis.
