The three-member IAEA team arrived in Tehran on Tuesday and will travel to the southern city of Bandar Abbas on Wednesday to visit the Gachin mine, the AEOI spokesman, Behrouz Kamalvandi, added.
He noted that the inspectors will hold talks with AEOI senior officials on Tuesday and leave the Iranian capital for Vienna on Wednesday.
“Based on the negotiations which will be held this afternoon, an agreement will be reached on the manner of inspection and the inspectors will be provided with managed access [to the mine],” Kamalvandi said.
The visit is part of a joint statement signed by Iran and the UN nuclear body in November 2013 to outline a roadmap for bilateral cooperation on certain outstanding issues.
Under the deal, Iran agreed, on a voluntary basis, to allow the IAEA inspectors to visit Arak heavy water plant and Gachin uranium mine.
The IAEA Safeguards Agreement does not require Tehran to authorize IAEA inspections of these sites. The voluntary move is a goodwill gesture on the part of Iran to clear up ambiguities over the peaceful nature of its nuclear energy program.
