The Secretary General of the League of Arab States (LAS), Nabil El Arabi and the OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu issued a joint appeal to the Syrian government and all the warring military parties in Syria to observe a total ceasefire and stop all forms of violence and fighting on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha, which falls next week.
El Arabi and Ihsanoglu stated that the announcement of such a truce by the warring parties would kindle hope among all Syrians for a comprehensive end to fighting and violence.
Most of the Arab world and Muslim countries worldwide will be on holiday next week when the Eid al-Adha festival starts.
The call for ceasefire comes as most influential members of the Arab League, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, happen to be biggest supporters of the war in Syria.
The 22-member body was widely criticized for its controversial decision in May to hand over Syria’s seat to the opposition side which has been leading the war in Syria with the support of al-Qaeda-linked terrorist groups.
According to reports Qatar has already spent billion of dollars to help the militants in Syria overthrow the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
