Exclusive: Syria’s Barzeh empty of residents

People have completely evacuated the strategic town of Barzeh in Syria’s Rif Dimashq following heavy clashes between the anti-Syria militants and army soldiers, al-Alam reports.

According to our reporter Darin Fadhl, who was accompanying a Syrian army brigade in their operation in Barzeh, there are no citizens staying in the town anymore as heavy fire is exchanged between the two sides.

Barzeh is a strategic town due to its closeness to the capital.

Militants benefited from the congested texture of the town and many residents used to get trapped in smaller neighborhoods where they were used as human shields by the extremist groups.

According to an army commander, several militants have been captured during latest operations in Barzeh and many other have fled the town.

He said they have come to find several buildings which were used by militants to keep abducted civilians or soldiers.

Different tools for making bombs and also for torturing the abductees were found in those buildings, according to the Syrian commander.

People have been witnessing brutal scenes of killing and torture in some areas of the country which have been occupied and controlled by anti-Syria groups.

As the Syrian government is struggling with internal and external threats of wider conflicts, people have been forced to live under strict rules imposed by some of the militant groups who benefit international silence on their crimes.

A US plan to bomb the country over a chemical attack near Syrian capital on August 21 was canceled with Russia’s mediation that sought to ease the tensions by putting Syria’s stockpile of chemical weapons under international control.

The offer was widely welcomed both in Syria and other countries that were concerned by US military ambitions and its regional consequences.
