Mohamed al-Zawahiri, brother of al-Qaeda’s chief, has confessed to receiving 25 million dollars from Egyptian prominent Muslim Brotherhood figure, Khairat al-Shatir, to launch a terrorist attack in the Sinai Peninsula.

Mohammed al-Zawahri, ringleader of a Salafist group who is also al-Qaeda leader Ayman Zawahiri’s brother, was detained by Egyptian security forces on Sunday at a checkpoint in Giza, a city located across the Nile from Cairo.

Egyptian Al-Dostour newspaper published parts of the first confessions made by Mohammed al-Zawahri, citing informed sources.

Besides collecting the 25 million dollars, Zawahri has also confessed that members of the Jihad Organization assassinated Egyptian soldiers at Rafah crossing in August 2012 following an order by Shatir.

The August 2012 Sinai attack occurred on 5 August 2012, when armed men ambushed an Egyptian military base in the Sinai Peninsula, killing 16 soldiers and stealing two armored cars.

He said Tarek al-Zumar and Abbud al-Zumar conveyed Shatir messages to the Jihad Organization members.

Abbud al-Zumar is an Egyptian fundamentalist and former military intelligence colonel in the Egyptian Army.

Abbud along with his cousin Tarek al-Zumar, a prominent figure of the Gama'a al-Islamiyya, were Egypt's most famous political prisoners. To many Egyptians, Zumar's name evokes a violent chapter in the history of a country.

According to the newspaper, Zawahiri said the Brotherhood had a 4-stage plan for Egypt.

First, they planned to make chaos through spreading rumors and affecting public opinion to provoke anarchy while scaring people off with firing up several state buildings.

According to his confessions, spreading rumors were done by renting some Palestinian networks and paying them to let the group use their media.

He said Qatar and Aljazeera had also a part in igniting the unrest.

The second stage included provoking the army against Brotherhood and killing as many of them that could make a weak image of Egyptian army.

They even waited for the army to start attacking Brotherhood figures or even kill them, so that they could use it to launch an international media propaganda against the army.

In the third stage of their plans, the Muslim Brotherhood was going to ask European countries to impose a no-fly zone on Egypt and even impose sanctions on the Egyptian interim government to put the administration under more pressure.

The final stage, which is not foreseen by many, is bringing al-Qaeda and Taliban terrorist groups into Sinai.

According to the paper, recent arrest of several afghan and Pakistani figures by Egyptian security forces in Sinai is a sign of this stage being conducted now.

Egypt has been experiencing unrelenting violence since July 3, when the army toppled president Mohamed Morsi, the first democratically elected Egyptian head of state, and suspended the constitution and dissolved the parliament.

It also appointed the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mahmoud Mansour, as the new interim president.

The interim government in Egypt has been facing international condemnation over the killing of protesters.
