Ezzat, 69, holds a doctorate in medicine from Zagazig University (1985), master’s degree in medicine (1980), BS in medicine (1975), diploma from Institute of Islamic Studies (1998).

He joined the brotherhood when he was 18 and rose through the ranks to become deputy guide in 2010.

In 1965 he was arrested and was held prisoner for ten years for his political activities.

In 1974, after getting out of jail, he graduated from university and in 1992 he was again arrested for his alleged role in the salsabil case.

Salsabil is one of Egypt’s first software companies which signed the Egyptian military as one of its clients.

In 1992, the government of toppled Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak fabricated a case against Salsabil to target the MB’s finances, shut the company down, and lay off more than 200 workers and imprisone MB leaders for a year without charges.

In 1995, he was imprisoned for being a leader of Muslim Brotherhood which was referred as an illegal organization.

He was jailed again in January 2008, this time for participating in Cairo demonstrations against Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.

In the media, Ezzat has been personified as the Brotherhood’s “iron man,” embodying its reputation for top-down decision-making.
