Kamal al-Helbawy, a former member of the Muslim Brotherhood and secretary general of the Islamic Unity Forum, warned about worse than expected scenarios that could hit Egypt if the condition gets more out of control.
He told al-Alam that in plans foreseen for Egypt, the events after June 30 are usually ignored and many of the solutions that are proposed analyze Egypt condition as it was in the January 25th revolution.
The condition is totally different this time, he added, referring to latest developments in the North African country following ouster of Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi by the military in July 3.
“11 from Morsi’s 17 advisors who were from Islamists, left the presidential office because there were certain mistakes in country’s management and the authorities were not following the right path,” the former Brotherhood member said.
He said some brotherhood leaders made “deadly mistakes” in dealing with anti-government protests in the Rabe'a al-Adawiya, which led to Morsi’s removal, that made people doubt seriously about Brotherhoods capabilities in managing the country.
Helbawy said the condition could get worse with having the insurgency that has gripped Syria for more than two years, repeated in Egypt.
He said those who called for war against Syria and invited extremists to pour in the country, could do the same about Egypt if the crisis is not controlled soon enough.
This could easily lead to interventions from United States and other countries in Egypt and this is the worst that can happen to the country.
The war in Syria started in March 2011, when pro-reform protests turned into a massive insurgency following the intervention of Western and regional states.
The unrest, which took in terrorist groups from across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, has transpired as one of the bloodiest conflicts in recent history.
He pointed out to the complexity of the condition in Egypt, saying that those who are opposing the Brotherhood these days, are same people who feared return of figures loyal to toppled Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak, and so they stood behind Morsi.
But now everything is more complicated because people faced a poor performance by Morsi “who treated the whole country as a division of the Brotherhood”.
Egypt has been experiencing unrelenting violence since July 3, when the army toppled Morsi, the first democratically elected Egyptian head of state, and suspended the constitution and dissolved the parliament.
It also appointed the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mahmoud Mansour, as the new interim president.
The interim government in Egypt has been facing international condemnation over the killing of protesters.
