Egypt’s new interim government is going to reconsider its relations with Syria, following the military's ouster of ex-president Mohammed Morsi.

In his first public comments since becoming Egypt's top diplomat, Egypt's new foreign minister Nabil Fahmy said on Saturday Cairo has no intention of supporting an extremist war in Syria.

"Everything will be re-evaluated," Fahmy told reporters in Cairo.

Fahmy's comments signaled a shift from Morsi's approach.

Fahmy said Egypt is seeking a political solution to the three-year crisis in Syria, which has killed more than 90,000 people, according to the United Nations.

The former president had made supporting the insurgency in Syria a cornerstone of his foreign policy.

Just weeks before Morsi was deposed on July 3, a senior presidential aide said authorities would not prevent Egyptians from travelling to Syria to join the war against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Morsi also attended a rally on June 15 in which hard-line clerics called on their followers to join the fight in Syria.

Speaking at the rally, Morsi announced he was severing diplomatic ties with Damascus.

Fahmy said Egypt is "seriously assessing" its relations with Iran as well.

The foreign minister said Egypt is also looking at its relationship with Ethiopia and Turkey.

Tension in Egypt have been intensified since the Egyptian army overthrew Morsi, suspended the constitution, dissolved the parliament on July 3 and declared the chief justice of Egypt’s Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mansour, as interim president the following day.

Dozens of people have since been killed in the wave of violent clashes between Morsi supporters, his opponents and security forces.
