“On this difficult path, we will be able to overcome all problems through patience, rationality and moderation,” Rohani said in a meeting with a group of Iranian clerics on Wednesday.

“We must respond to people’s needs and questions,” Rohani said, adding that the government should work to ensure the people’s security and livelihood and protect their rights.

For a government to be strong does not mean that it must interfere in all affairs, limit the lives of people and meddle in their private lives, said Rohani.

Stressing the necessity of avoiding extremism, Rohani said people must feel secure with regards to the international situation and they must have political and economic security.

“Today, we are facing many problems,” the Iranian president-elect said, adding that, “During the course of Iran’s history, no administration has faced the problems that this administration is facing.”

Rohani reiterated that the country will overcome the problems with the help and support of the people. He added, however, that the 11th administration should be given the necessary time and opportunity, and people are well aware that they should solve the problems through patience.

Commenting on the relationship between the people and the clergy, Rohani said the clergy are the voice of the people and act as intermediaries between the people and the government.

In the current situation where people hope for change and improvement, said the Iranian president-elect, there should not be a wedge between the government, the clergy and the society.

Rohani won the presidential election of June 14, which was marked by a high voter turnout, winning 50.7 percent of a total of 36, 704, 156 ballots counted.
