The report by Lebanon’s Al Akhbar daily says the intelligence agency of the Lebanese army have recently detained a Jordanian citizen with a fake Palestinian ID, who was caught delivering weapons under the cover of the Qatari humanitarian aid to Syria.
The detainee confessed to having obtained some 3 million dollars in cash from a Qatari Red Crescent official only to procure weapons for the militant groups in Syria from Lebanon.
The Syrian army has frequently said that foreign nationals or aid agencies use the cover of humanitarian assistance to smuggle arms into the country.
It argues that on such grounds the Syrian military tightly inspects the aid to conflict zones.
The turmoil in Syria erupted in March 2011. Since then, many people, including large numbers of Syrian soldiers and security personnel, have been killed.
In May, President Assad said militants from 29 different countries were fighting against the government in different parts of the country.
On June 13, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said at least 93,000 people have been killed since the outbreak of the foreign-sponsored militancy against the Syrian government.
