Palestinian sources in the Gaza Strip say Israeli forces have shot and injured a young Gazan farmer in the northern part of the impoverished coastal sliver.

21-year-old Ahmad Hamdin was picking watermelons in the Abu Safiyeh neighborhood east of Jabalia, when Israeli troops fired at him. The young man was rushed to hospital for sustaining injuries.

The Israeli military confirmed its act of aggression, claiming that several Palestinians had "attempted to damage" the fence Israel built around the impoverished Palestinians enclave.

Gaza has been blockaded since June 2007, which is a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

Israeli army soldiers regularly fire at Palestinians who they claim approach the fence.
