The Friends of Syria Conference has kicked off in Iranian capital, Tehran, with the participation of representatives from 40 countries.

Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi made the opening speech to start the event which is held under the banner of “Political Solution, Regional Stability,” to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

“Today we have gathered in a condition that the Syria crisis has turned to a complicated status with recent aggressions of Zionists and it is in need of constructive and effective participation all the friendly countries, “ Salehi said regarding growing concerns about Israel’s aggressive moves for spreading the war in Syria to the whole region.

He added, “Without a doubt, with its special political, social and geopolitical features, Syria is one of the important and role-player countries in the region and continuation of crisis in this country can cause a serious damage to the stability of the whole region”.

Iranian foreign minister said escalation of violations and bloodshed along with further delays in the process of reaching to a political solution for the crisis does not benefit regional countries and make a ground for more conflicts.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran condemns financial and military supports of some countries to the irresponsible armed groups and firing flames of sinister religious and sectarian conspiracies,” he said adding that those who claim they support democracy in Syria, try to make the way for Syrian people to choose their future through a democratic approach.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly expressed its opposition to any foreign intervention in Syria's internal affairs, stressing that inclusive dialog and national reconciliation as well as free elections are the keys to resolving the unrest in the Arab country.

Iran has held the conference in a bid to help a finding a political solution to the foreign-backed crisis in its neighbor before it turns to become a threat to the whole region.

According to reports, Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, Algerian Foreign Minister Mourad Medelci, Oman’s Deputy Foreign Minister Youssef Al-Harthi, former Lebanese president Emile Lahoud and Minister for Defense and National Service of Tanzania Shamsi Vuai Nahodha are among the officials attending the event.
