Former two-time Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani has joined the country’s 11th presidential elections race putting an end to months of speculations about his candidacy.

Ayatollah Hashemi appeared at the interior ministry building to register for the upcoming elections to be held on June 14.

Over 680 hopefuls have registered for the Islamic Republic of Iran presidential elections, in what analysts believe could be the tightest race so far.

Registration will come to an end today with more political heavyweights joining the race, according to Interior ministry reports.

Around two dozen political figures from across the political spectrum, most of them Principlists, have so far announced their bid for running in upcoming presidential election.
