Around two dozen political figures from across the political spectrum, most of them Principlists, have so far announced their bid for running in upcoming presidential election. 

Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili on Saturday registered to run for president in the June 14 election, joining several conservative hopefuls including Mayor of Tehran, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, former foreign minister Ali Akbar Velayati and former parliament speaker, Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel.

Two other leading Principlists, Mohammad Hassan Abu-Torabi Fard and former health minister Kamran Baqeri Lankarani, are also running, as is Mohsen Rezaie, who currently serves as the secretary of Iran Expediency Council.
 

Hassan Rohani, a former nuclear negotiator under president Mohammad Khatami, and several other reformists including former member of parliament Mostafa Kavakebian and Mohammad-Reza Aref, a vice president under Khatami have also registered for candidacy.

 

The registration of presidential hopefuls officially began on May 7. Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar said on Friday that the registration would end at 6 p.m. (1330 GMT) Saturday, and the final list of candidates will be announced five to 10 days later.

 

The top supervisory body, Guardian Council, has already started the vetting process of the hopefuls and a final list of candidates will be out in less than two weeks.
