Egyptian justice minister Ahmed Mekki has resigned two days after demonstrators loyal to President Mohammed Morsi called for his dismissal and a purge of the judiciary.

"Mr Mekki will continue to undertake his assignments until a new minister is appointed as part of a planned cabinet reshuffle," the cabinet spokesman, Alaa al-Hadeedi said Sunday.

Morsi said Saturday that he would soon reshuffle the government and provincial governors.

The online edition of the state-run newspaper al-Ahram published a copy of Mekki's resignation letter, dated April 20, a day after thousands of protesters on Friday, poured to the streets calling for an independent judiciary.

Friction between the government and the judiciary has been on the rise since March when the Administrative Court ordered the cancellation of a decree calling for parliamentary elections, forcing a delay in voting due to have begun in April.
