British Foreign Secretary William Hague told a news conference in London after meeting Syrian rebel figures that London cannot hand over the embassy over legal considerations, adding the rebels will receive the mission at the right moment.
He made the comments ahead of the G8 foreign ministerial meeting that will be held in London on Wednesday.
The British secretary said Syria will top the agenda of the meeting.
“Literally, the top of our agenda will be the situation in Syria, that will be the first subject that we discuss," he said.
Hague further said Britain and France will continue to push for an EU arms embargo on Syria to be lifted to allow arms deliveries to anti-government militia groups in the Middle Easter country.
The current embargo will expire at the end of May and the majority of other EU nations, including Germany, support its renewal.
