New coalition formed in Iraq for local elections

Head of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq says a new coalition of different political parties and religious figures has been formed to take part in the country’s upcoming local council elections.

Ammar al-Hakim told a news conference on Sunday “al-Mawatin” brings together 22 political groups including Bada’na Movement and the Iraqi National Congress Party.


“This coalition is formed by intellectuals as well as local and social figures who play an active role in Baghdad and in the provinces,” al-Hakim said, adding that the coalition is determined to make its presence felt in the upcoming elections.


The Iraqi cabinet has set April 20 as the date for the country's provincial elections and campaigning has got under way since March 1st.
