In an exclusive interview with al-Alam TV on Sunday, the head of Foreign Policy and National Security Committee of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis), Alaeddin Boroujerdi said, "the West should not expect Iran to alter its nuclear program as long as there are still sanctions against the country. This is not logical at all."
The United States, the Zionist regime of Israel, and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program. Iran, as a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has rejected the accusations saying it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
Iran and the P5+1 group have held several rounds of talks with a focus on Iran’s nuclear energy program and the next round of the talks is scheduled for February 26th in Kazakhstan.
The Iranian MP said, “We believe the existence of even one nuclear bomb threatens the whole international community and strongly object its presence in any part of the world, because there may be other (Harry) Trumans who order its use again”.
The atomic bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were conducted by the United States in 1945, ordered by the then US president Harry S. Truman. These two events represent the only use of nuclear weapons in history of wars, to date.
Boroujerdi said Iran needs to pursue its program to meet its future energy needs and for some of them 20% uranium enrichment is not sufficient. “Iran needs some additional 20 thousand Megawatts of energy in the next 20 years and as long as our nation’s energy needs are not satisfied, we cannot stand still,” he added.
Speaking on the possibility of negotiations between Iran and the United States, Boroujerdi said, “This is not a new issue and the matter has previously been suggested several times. Our only objection towards the US is its unjustified policies towards Iran and they need to be changed if any good results are expected from any possible negotiations.”
Broujerdi said Iran and US had engaged in talks before to solve the violence problem in Iraq, and this showed, “there are no mere objections to starting negotiations, but there are certain conditions”.
