US Republican Senator Bob Corker has called the White House an “adult day care center,” after being attacked by President Donald Trump over his decision to retire from Congress.

(presstv) -- “It’s a shame the White House has become an adult day care center. Someone obviously missed their shift this morning,” Corker, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, wrote in a tweet on Sunday.

The comments came after the Republican president went on a Twitter rampage against Corker, accusing him of obstructionism and saying he was not brave enough to run again for Senate.

“Senator Bob Corker ‘begged’ me to endorse him for re-election in Tennessee. I said ‘NO’ and he dropped out (said he could not win without my endorsement),” the president said in a tweet.

“He also wanted to be secretary of state, I said ‘NO THANKS.’ He is also largely responsible for the horrendous Iran deal!” the Republican president said, referring to Corker’s support for the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, which Trump is reportedly preparing to decertify against advice from his top aides.

“Hence, I would fully expect Corker to be a negative voice and stand in the way of our great agenda. Didn’t have the guts to run!””

Corker announced his decision to retire last month.

A firm supporter of Trump during last year’s presidential election campaign, Corker turned against Trump after being shortlisted for both vice president and secretary of state.

Corker said Wednesday that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense James Mattis, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly and other top administration officials “help separate us from chaos.”

“I think Secretary Tillerson, Secretary Mattis and Chief of Staff Kelly are those people that help separate our country from chaos,” he said, when asked about recent reports about Tillerson’s faltering ties with Trump.

Corker’s opposition to Trump’s tax reforms is seen by experts as another reason triggering the standoff which could prove costly for Republicans, who cannot afford defections given their slim 52-48 majority in the Senate.
