Twenty-three people were injured in the first three days of the traditional "Toro Chutay" bull-fighting festival in Peru's Huancavelica region.

The majority of injuries happened during the "Jala Toro" act in which horsemen parade outside the stadium, pulling a group of bulls by ropes attached to their horns, whilst onlookers taunt the animals.

Nine of the injured were admitted to the local Huancavelica Regional Hospital because of the severity of their injuries.

Despite the incidents, the popular bullfights will continue throughout the week-long Fiesta de las Cruces (Feast of the Crosses) festival. Bullfighting is popular and legal in Peru, Colombia and Mexico.
