US President Barack Obama has offered congratulations to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the creation of a new coalition cabinet.

The US president said he would work with the new Israeli administration, according to AFP.

Netanyahu made opposition to nuclear negotiations with Iran a centerpiece of his reelection campaign. He also rejected the idea of a Palestinian state, which has been a key element of US foreign policy.

Obama told Netanyahu at the time that the United States would "reassess" its relations with Israel over "the prime minister's new positions and comments."

Relations between the United States and Israel have been strained since Obama took office in 2009.
