"We do not have any information to corroborate reports out of Iraq that Baghdadi has been either killed or wounded," Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, told a news conference.
Initially, reports surfaced of the ISIL commander being wounded in an airstrike appeared on Saturday, and were followed by a confirmation by Iraqi government officials and Iraqi state television on Sunday.
US Central Command previously announced the airstrikes had destroyed a convoy of armed trucks after targeting a gathering of extremist leaders near the city of Mosul in northern Iraq. However, the Pentagon said it could not confirm whether al-Baghdadi was in the convoy.
Meanwhile the Iraqi Interior Ministry confirmed that the leader of ISIL, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was injured, and a number of the group's members were killed in air strikes carried out by the American lead international coalition.
