Iran attaches importance to the significant role of the UN in resolving regional and global disputes and believes that the body should be more authoritative in dealing with these issues, Zarif said during the meeting in New York on Thursday.
He also described his talks with Eliasson as very fruitful, and expressed the hope that talks between the two sides would continue in the next month meeting in Tehran.
In the meeting, Zarif and UN deputy secretary-general discussed various issues, including the current developments in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran's nuclear issue and emergence of Daesh Takfiri terrorist group.
Zarif left Tehran for New York on Tuesday morning to participate in the next round of nuclear talks between Iran and the six major world powers on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting.
