Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accompanies his closest ally Esfandiyar Rahim Mashaee to the interior ministry, where he came to test his chances of becoming future president of Iran.

Mashaee registered to run for president in the 11th presidential elections as the candidate who enjoys the government’s backing.

First vice-president Muhammad Reza Rahimi also registered to run for president. His affiliation in the race is unknown.

Over 680 hopefuls have registered for the Islamic Republic of Iran presidential elections, in what analysts believe could be the tightest race so far.

Registration will come to an end today with more political heavyweights joining the race, according to Interior ministry reports.

Around two dozen political figures from across the political spectrum, most of them Principlists, have so far announced their bid for running in upcoming presidential election.
