There have been no reports of casualties and damage in the earthquake that occured early Wednesday.  The strong earthquake frayed locals' nerves on the Iran-Pakistan border.

The quake came a day after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake rocked Iran's southeastern province of Sistan and Baluchestan near the border with Pakistan.

One person has been killed dead and several others wounded in the earthquake that a sparsely populated rural area between the Iranian provincial cities of Saravan and Khash at a depth of 95 kilometers (59 miles) at 3:14 p.m. local time (1044 GMT) on Tuesday.

In Pakistan, troops scrambled Wednesday to aid the remote victims of an earthquake centered in nearby Iran.

Although the epicentre of Tuesday's quake lay in southeast Iran but most of 40 deaths reported so far have been across the border in Pakistan's province of Baluchistan, where hundreds of mud-built homes suffered damage.

The powerful tremor shook the ground and caused panic as far afield as Kuwait and the Indian capital New Delhi. Thousands of people evacuated towering residential and office buildings in Dubai.

On April 9, a powerful 6.1 magnitude quake struck southern Bushehr province, killing 37 people, injuring 850 and devastating two villages.

Iran sits on major geological faultlines and has suffered several devastating earthquakes, including a 6.6 magnitude quake in 2003 that flattened the city of Bam, Kerman province in Iran’s far southeast, killing more than 25,000 people.
