Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s anti-Syria policy has been described as a “grave mistake” by leader of Turkey’s main opposition party Kamel Kilicdaroglu.
Kilicdaroglu said that “Ankara’s government has committed a grave mistake in its positions on Syria” in an interview with Turkey’s Sky TV on Friday.
The head of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) noted that Ankara’s financial support to foreign-backed terrorists in Syria leads to more deaths and suffering in the country.
Thousands of Syrian people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed since the unrest began in March 2011.
Noting that a very large number of the armed terror groups operating in Syria are foreign nationals, the Syrian government holds that the turmoil is being orchestrated from abroad.
A number of International Human Rights organizations condemned foreign-backed terrorists for committing war crimes in the war-torn Middle East nation.
Voicing regret over Turkey’s current approach, Kilicdaroglu called for the government to arrange for resolving the unrest in Syria. He asserted that such an undertaking shall be done through negotiation among all sides, and not through backing the armed terror group.
He stated that Syrians, themselves, should decide on how to end the crisis in their country, and no foreign intervention shall be allowed.
On February 15, the Syrian government sent a letter to the United Nations, blasting Turkey's "destructive" role in the conflict that has ravaged the country for the past 23 months.
In the letter, the Syrian Foreign Ministry accused Ankara of publicly supporting and financing terrorists fighting the Syrian government and allowing Turkey’s soil to be used for training and housing anti-Damascus terrorist groups.
It also accused Turkey of taking "increasingly hostile stances towards Syria, by blocking measures taken by Damascus for a political solution to end the unrest."
