The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) says the Islamic Republic plans to construct 16 new nuclear power plants across the country, al-Alam reports.

AEOI said in a statement on Saturday that the new plants will be built on the coasts of Caspian Sea, Persian Gulf, Sea of Oman and southwestern Khuzestan province.

The statement added that Iran has discovered more uranium reserves in different parts across the country.

Following the new discoveries over the past 1.5 years, the country’s mineral reserves and resources have increased 4.5 times compared to 35 years ago, it added.

In September 2011, Iran’s first nuclear power plant officially began its operations in southern Bushehr province, generating electricity at 40 percent of its capacity.

The 1000-megawatt plant, which is operating under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), reached its maximum power generation capacity for the first time on August 30, 2012.
