Several underground stations were closed during the rush hour while others offered only limited service, forcing the commuters to walk or use overcrowded buses. Clapham Junction station was evacuated because of overcrowding.

Tube staff walked out at 1800GMT on Sunday in a dispute over ticket office closures, citing safety issues.

Transport for London said service would be greatly reduced until Monday evening. London's subway system handles more than 4 million journeys during a typical business day.
