Libyan forces loyal to the UN-backed government have made advances in their fight against Islamic State (ISIS / Daesh / ISIL / IS) terrorist group militants in the coastal city of Sirte.
Pro-government forces managed to reach the area of Bo Far’aa on Sunday and took control of the Internal Security building, which was used by ISIS militants as a prison.
Sirte is ISIS’s last remaining bastion in the country, and Libyan troops have been forcing the militants into ever-smaller bits of territory there, backed by heavy artillery and tanks.
ISIS has often struck back with suicide attacks.
Libya descended into chaos following the 2011 ousting and killing of dictator Moammar Gadhafi, and has been split between rival parliaments and governments based in Tripoli and the country’s east.
