Iraqi officials have updated the death toll from a recent bombing in a soccer stadium near the capital, Baghdad, saying 41 people are now confirmed dead in the terror attack which was claimed by the ISIS Takfiri group.

Security and public health officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, provided the toll Saturday, saying 105 people were wounded in the blast which took place a day earlier during a match in the small stadium in the city of Iskanderiyah, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of Baghdad.

ISIS has been dealt major blows by Iraqi forces over the past months. The terrorists have launched several high-profile attacks targeting civilians to avenge the defeats.

Iraqi security forces and allied tribal and volunteer fighters are in the midst of an operation to retake territories from ISIS in the western province of Anbar while a simultaneous offensive is underway to liberate areas under the control of the militants in the northern province of Nineveh.

On Friday, Iraqi troops pushed militants out of the town of Kubaysah, which is located in the district of Hit in Anbar. This came one day after Iraqi soldiers and Kurdish fighters retook three villages located on the outskirts of the town of Makhmour, east of Nineveh’s provincial capital of Mosul.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq has recently announced that a total of 670 Iraqis were killed and 1,290 others injured in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in February.

According to the UN mission, the number of civilian fatalities stood at 410 while violence also claimed the lives of 260 members of the Iraqi security forces. A great portion of the fatalities was recorded in Baghdad, where 277 civilians were killed.
