Russia has warned its citizens that the terrorist group of ISIS is planning to kidnap Russian nationals in Turkey and take them hostage.
“According to the competent agencies, leaders of the ISIS terrorist group plan to take hostages from among Russian citizens in Turkey,” Russia’s federal tourism agency said in a statement on Wednesday.
The agency also warned that the hostages could be taken to ISIS-held areas to be used as “human shields.”
“Hostages can be transferred on to territories controlled by militants to hold public executions and to be used as human shields in combat with Syrian government and coalition forces,” the statement said, urging “all independent tourists departing for Turkey” to ensure their safety by “taking all possible measures.”
Relations between Moscow and Ankara have been strained since the downing of a Russian bomber plane by Turkish fighter jets on the Syrian soil in November 2015.
Organized tours by travel agencies to Turkey have been already banned by Russia as part of a number of punitive measures adopted against Ankara following the plane incident.
The Kremlin has also accused the Turkish leadership of funding the Takfiri terrorists of ISIS.
Russia is already engaged in a campaign against Daesh and other terrorist groups in Syria. The combat sorties began on September 30, 2015, upon a request from the Syrian government, Press TV reported.
